Teen AngstAfter a long hiatus Teen Angst nights are back!

In case you’ve never heard about this night Teen Angst: A Celebration of Inadvertently Hilarious Adolescent Writing, as it’s now called, is an event for those of you that ever wrote journals, poetry, letters, short stories, songs (anything, really) and kept it. Think about this- why did you keep it? To share it with the world! Well, that’s what I’m hoping for as the host and co-producer of the night.

Now you may be asking- why would someone subject themselves to such humiliation? I have a few theories:1- It’s funny 2- people love to be on stage 3- It’s cathartic 4- You now will know that there are others out there that felt your pain.

Teen Angst nights have inspired several copy-cat shows across the border but Teen Angst has been going strong(ish) since 2000. Here’s what happens: anyone who has writing from when they were a teenager goes through their old notes and finds the most embarrassing parts, then they go down to the Railway Club at 579 Dunsmuir Street on the second Tuesday of the Month- starting March 11- and gets up on stage and reads for an audience of Teen Angst celebrators.

Here’s an example of something I’ve read at the night:

To Kurt Cobain

April 12, 1994

Why suicide?
Someone else should have died
Did you think ahead
Did you know the impacts of your being dead?
You’re selfish and dead
Because you put a bullet in your head
But in our hearts you will remain
But my feelings for you will never be the same
Our questions unanswered
Never to be asked
Never to understand the uncomprehendable note you left behind
You said you loved us
How so?
It’s a shame - a rotten shame
It’s done and over
Move on show’s over
Peace love empathy?
Whatever.
-age 14

So, get digging through your old journals and notebooks and we’ll see you on the stage!
