Finch’s homestyle gourmet

11202007-tablecrop.jpg It’s no lie, Finch’s makes the best sandwich in town.

Located at the corner of Pender and Homer, just under the Backpacker’s Inn, is Finch’s. Ostensibly a place for brunch and lunch, it takes a few mere seconds after entering to know that meticulous care has gone into the details, and it pays off in spades.

The decor takes a decidedly bohemian ’shabby chic’ slant that pleasantly dresses down the cafe and has a very welcoming effect, though the friendly counter staff has a lot to do with this as well.

egg soldiers stand to attentionThe attention to detail does not stop at the decor, as the menu is comprised mainly of delicious organic and local foods. Salads and sandwiches dominate the truly great menus which are mounted on the wall in ornate frames, but feel free to be tempted by the confections, which are impossible to resist once you’ve had a taste.

The item that keeps bringing me back is a simple fresh baguette topped with blue brie, roasted walnuts, vinaigrette, prosciutto, and thin pear slices. A well thought out sandwich and it’s hardly a tough sell, it keeps the clientèle coming back for more. For breakfast food, give the egg soldiers a try, they’re a classic for a reason.

One of my weekend haunts, and a comfy place that is a quintessential Vancouver phenomenon, really the only issue I take with Finch’s is that the hours are inconvenient for those who don’t work downtown. Though in an odd way it seems to add to the charm, at least when you’re not hungry and staring at the ‘Closed’ sign.
