Every where you turn, there is violence. In schools, in the streets, and even at home. You cannot watch the news without hearing about the war in Iraq. It’s ridiculous, and tragic. Yet hear I am, lying comfortably on my couch with my family watching Legends of the Fall. A movie about love, history, and what else? War. People are fascinated by violence and death. Which is why it attracts so much attention. However, that does not mean it is right. Violence has affected too many, but it remains a problem that cannot be stopped. It seems people have turned a cold shoulder to it, with no desire to try and help the issue. Because I am a high school student, violence with weapons is my main concern right now. Weapons at school has become an increasing risk, even for students as young as twelve years of age. The number of children and teens who have been murdered by a weapon is too high. This self written poem, is a tribute to that, or rather, a call out to anyone who does not wish to see violence, and would be proud to speak up against it.
Show your enemies you’r not a coward,
hide your fear behind a gun
watch them tremble
at the sight of death
as you hold all your dignity
in the cup of your hand.
This is your stance
against the world,
against anyone
whose ever screwed you over.
As you analyze yourself,
and your actions
you feel brave.
But everyone knows you do this
because you are weak
and this was plainly, a last resort.
You decided this was the best way.
This is how you would prove yourself.
In the honor of holding a weapon
and destroying a man.
But no such weapon exists.
For a thing of honor
would have been to reject this weapon.
