Last night, I had the pleasure of clambering into UBC’s Norm Theatre for a performance by Hayden Desser. As always, Desser’s great stage presence and penchant for storytelling made the evening memorable. The most unforgettable performance, however, came from opening act, Jenn Grant.Due to inclement weather in the East, Grant was unable to perform before Desser last night. In the final throes of Hayden’s encore, a vibrantly flustered Grant arrived in the theatre to join Desser in a duet. Following their joint performance, Desser finished his encore before inviting Grant to take the stage. This is when Jenn Grant blew me away. After being stuck in an airport in Atlantic Canada all day, Grant quickly shook off the jetlag. Her energetic performance enchanted the crowd. With a musical sound reminiscent of Jenny Whiteley and the Be Good Tanyas, Grant’s style melded brilliantly with the performance given by Desser. This in and of itself is a noteworthy feat. Hayden holds a special place in the hearts of many Canadians (especially those of us who grew up in the suburbs of Southern Ontario). Grant’s unique blend of spirit and skill made her a strong following act to Desser. I was also taken by the determination demonstrated to give such a performance, travel be damned. Grant’s set was not only a lesson in perseverance, but also a show of her commitment to her music.Hayden and Jenn Grant will be playing to a sold out audience again this evening. Fortunately, there is an additional opportunity to see Jenn Grant perform this Wednesday, at Chez Nous Ballroom. Tickets are $5, with doors opening at 8:00 p.m. Chez Nous Ballroom70 East 2nd AveVancouver
