As an alumnus of Simon Fraser University and an avid supporter of SFU athletics, I sort of conditioned myself to hate everything UBC.
In my opinion, SFU football was better (at least when I was a student) and so was every other sport.
We didn’t have Men’s baseball, but if we did, it would’ve been better too.
UBC does field a team and Thunderbirds baseball has been doing well for itself even winning an NAIA Regional I championship a few years ago.
But the crowning achievement for a college program is graduating players to Major League Baseball and more than a few T-Birds dot the rosters of big league teams.
When the opening pitch is tossed in Game 1 of the World Series tonight, between the Boston Red Sox and the Colorado Rockies, the hopes of the Mile High City will be riding on the arm of North Delta native and former UBC pitcher Jeff Francis.
I took a look through the UBC baseball record book and the Rockies’ ace has more than a few entries.
Lowest ERA, Complete Games, Shutouts and Most Wins are some of the feats the Southpaw accomplished while on the Point Grey campus.
To be honest with you, I haven’t really felt that rivalry fueled hatred for UBC in a while being more than a few years removed from university, so count me in the growing legion of baseball fans that will be cheering on UBC’s greatest gift to MLB.
We have to cheer on one of our own.
