As a sports writer for The Peak, Simon Fraser University’s student paper, my favorite time of the year was more or less around Thanksgiving long weekend.
While I was looking forward to cranberry sauce, mashed taters, stuffing and turkey, my excitement stemmed less from dinner and more from football.
There are usually some CFL games on Thanksgiving Monday, but the game I most looked forward to, took place at the start of the weekend when UBC and SFU would meet in the annual Shrum Bowl–the Clan were 3-0 during my university days.
The Yankees have the Red Sox; Michigan has Ohio State; the Habs have the Bruins; the Cowboys have the Redskins and SFU has UBC–bitter rivals all of them.
Named after Dr. Gordon Shrum, a man who established football at UBC and eventually became Chancellor at SFU, the battle for the Shrum Bowl has taken place on many battlefields.
While old Empire Stadium, UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium and Swangard Stadium have been past venues, this year’s game will happen on Terry Fox Field on SFU campus.
Taking place on October 6, 2007 at 1pm, tickets will only set you back $20 and are available at bookstores on SFU’s Burnaby and Harbour Center campuses.
The Shrum Bowl series is currently knotted at 14-14-1 and UBC is looking to even their record at 3-3 while SFU is looking for their first win in a while.
There will be a lot up for grabs, making the game all the spicier.
