Translink loves students

I know how bad the weather has been since I live at SFU, go to school in North Vancouver and work downtown. And as a student I do not understand why the buses, in comparison to the first semester in the fall, only come every 30 minutes at stations like Kootenay Loop and Phibbs exchange. Every day I line up with the rest of the student masses to withstand the cold air in what i call the student line of suffering. More importantly I am now late to my classes every morning because not only does the bus never come but it also stands and waits for a good 10 mins. Such transport availability is not only bad for my health but also for my reputation with my professors.

Yes yes, I know most of you are tired of hearing students complaining about transport but it’s becoming a real issue. Yesterday was a real kicker since no buses were going to SFU at all and the ones that did go to the other side of Hastings were mostly all full. Luckily I hopped on the 160 to Poco and got off at Sperling, and then I walked up the mountain. It took me a good 2 hours (with shortcuts) to make it to the top. By the time I was more then half-way up I couldn’t feel my legs anymore, but as the final result I did end up finally home and probably lost a good 2 pounds. Funny enough, people knew that the roads were not clear yet they still tried to get up, thus rows and rows of cars were stuck bumper to bumper closer to the top of SFU. I think for everyone else who couldn’t make it home, they just slept at the university which has really good indoor heating and lots of couches!

It’s pathetic to live in a city that doesn’t value mobility and, given it’s relatively tiny populace — as compared to Mumbai, Tokyo, New York, etc. who are marvelous developers of tracks and other “getting around” — Vancouver is embarrassing. And this is not a complaint, I didn’t…even start that.

A few of my lovely younger cousins were stuck up at SFU for awhile yesterday. Apparently the campus handed out blankets to keep students warm. Mobility in Vancouver - embarrassing indeed!
