Thoughts, transitions and adaptations…

window view I still cannot believe I survived what is considered the worst exam period of all of med school. It seems so long ago too for some reason, but the last set of exams was just this last Wednesday. After that, I had 3 days to finally spend some time with the important people in my life before I packed up my bags to head for my ‘rural clerkship’. Every single person in my class is heading out for a one month clerkship this summer somewhere in BC.

So where did I get sent you ask? 100 mile house? Kitimat? Terrace? Fort St. John? No, no, no and nope. The computer program that matched us must have had a crush on my long name, because it assigned me to….Sunshine Coast!

So here I am, sitting typing this, and looking out the window of my garden suite onto beautiful greenery. Being placed here though doesn’t mean I won’t be working hard- in fact, I just got a rough schedule for the week, and it looks like I will be alternating between a clinic and the hospital here, working 6 days a week with possible on call night shifts.

In any case, I hope to be able to write here often. I’ve never been a blogger, but perhaps this is a good time to try it out. I can already see why so many people do it. One, it’s somewhat therapeutic writing about life transitions and the process of adapting to a new place. It also makes me feel less alone to be putting this out there - a message in a bottle if you will, but in a virtual sea where more than one person can read it :)

Im really excited for your clerkship! Ive always been fascinated with the hard working world of medical students and the sort of things they have to deal with. I hope not to many big egos come your way during your work at Sunshine Coast and don’t too lonely - all of us read, but too lazy to comment.
