This year, the annual Earth Day celebration is expected to come on strong. The celebration is held at Jericho Beach Park, where last year’s crowd of 3000 doubled that of the previous year, thanks to the help of 100 volunteers. It must be said, however, that some of the attention might have been due to the presence of Raffi Cavoukian, famous singer and environmentalist, who gave a speech and performed his song “Cool It” in response to global warming/climate change.
Activities on Earth Day at Jericho Beach Park include the removal of invasive plants and the replanting of native species and a musical lineup by the Vancouver Folk Festival Society. A new feature this year will be an eco-market showcasing the wares of earth-friendly entrepreneurs and organisations with fresh ideas of how to incorporation environmental thinking into daily life. The event is geared toward family and community, with a festive feel from wandering performers and children’s activities.
Interestingly enough, Earthday.net is a US based international organization that has established Earth Day to be on April 22nd. They provide grants to areas in need all over the globe, from Venezuela to the Maldives. You can check out earth day events that have been registered through their website for the lower mainland, or anywhere, with this map.
So whether you’re interested in volunteering, getting involved on a global scale, or just showing up at Jericho Beach on April 26th, there is lots to explore. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Alston Bonamis at:
