At 4:30 on this evening of January the 28th 2008, David Suzuki will be making an appearance and presenting a speech for UBC’s Science Week. Entry is by a minimum donation of $2, and all proceeds will be going towards the David Suzuki Foundation. His speech will be about the contraversy regarding the confluence of traditional knowledge and new scientific discovery. I am supposing that the idea is to demonstrate how “traditional knowledge” is useful not only to the extent that it has led to the further development of modern science, but has continued value. What that value would be, I know not (being an Arts student myself) but I would not find it hard to believe that our future leading scientists would be quick to dismiss what they would consider “outdated” beliefs or methods… but perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself.

The week’s activities will feature demonstrations by the various science clubs on campus, fund-raising events such as the sale of 100% organic clothing in the spirit of sustainability (proceeds for which also go to the DSF), “fun” activities like jello wrestling (ew!) and a chemistry magic show.

If you can’t make it to see David Suzuki this afternoon but are interested, you will be glad to know he is making another appearance in Vancouver this March.

Three wonderful events back to back, including this one: First Tzeporah Berman was speaking yesterday and this afternoons there was a ForestEthics protest in downtown spearheaded by her also.

For all of you, hope you are able to go to Suzuki and, if so, I’d like to hear what notes you took and what your observations are.

    Cheers.
