For over 9 years, the Snow family has been producing over 85 different organic vegetables including artichokes, beets, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, collards, cucumber, fennel, kale, leeks, parsley, shallots and spinach on their farm. One of their biggest crops is celery. “I believe we have the largest celery farm, including the non-organic farms, in all of BC,” says Susan Snow.

Not only is this farm distinct for growing such a large variety of veggies, it is also has a unique arrangement with the Municipality of Delta and the Delta Wildlife Trust.

The Fraser delta contains internationally significant wildlife habitat as well as highly productive farmland. It is recognized as one of Canada’s Important Bird Areas due to the large numbers of migratory and resident birds that congregate in the delta at various times throughout the year. In fact, it is estimated that a minimum of 1.5 million birds from 20 countries travel through the delta on an annual basis.

Snow Farm leases 60 acres of prime farmland to the Municipality of Delta with the proviso that the land is farmed organically. This contributes to soil and wildlife habitat conservation and enhancement.

The Snows grow rotational crops (parsley instead of potatoes, for instance) within neighbouring organic farms. The 40 acres farmed this way provides a cleansing break for pests and diseases and gives the Snows more room to farm.
