http://cohesion.rice.edu/Facilities/FEP/RiceRecycles/emplibrary/CellPhones.JPGI’ve read about an interesting Food Bank concept you may not know about. This one is headed by a local Highschool here in Vancouver.

York House School is currently involved in the Rogers Phones-for-Food High School Challenge. In this challenge, old cell phones are recycled to reduce e-waste. The money raised from recycling the cell phones is then given to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, who has triple times the buying power. Four other schools are involved in this challenge and whichever school who brings in the most cell phones per student in the graduating class wins the challenge along with $3000 for the graduating class to use for their Graduation Dinner and Dance. For example, our graduating class has 48 students, therefore if we raise 96 cell phones we would have 2 points.

Not only would we like to win the challenge, but, as a “green school”, we want to reduce our impact on the environment by recycling as many old cell phones as possible, while maintaining our longstanding commitment to the Food Bank.

The Grade 12 Class Presidents along with the Sustainability Committee would like your help, and would appreciate your donation of as many old cell phones as possible. This includes used cell phones, BlackBerrys, pagers, and PDAs that may be cracked, or damaged. Ask your relatives, friends and coworkers too! Most people have an old cell phone lying around somewhere, so simply give them to your daughter to bring to school, or drop them off at the office of Sylvia Hanson (Sr.) or Rose Yearwood (Jr.) by April 2nd for them to be counted in the challenge.

Please note that this project will be ongoing for the rest of the year, so please continue dropping off all unwanted cell phones as soon as you are ready to discard them. If you have any questions or comments please email classpresidents12[at]yorkhouse.ca and we will be more than happy to help you. Thanks for your support, The Grade 12 Class Presidents & the Sustainability Committee.
