“The Dominion has the guts to look at Canada without the fairytales about our national virtue that comfort and blind us. Our country is at a crucial turning point and we need the brave writers at The Dominion to tell us the truth about where we are heading.”

“The media is the place where we have a discussion with each other. We can’t know everyone individually. We do it through the media. When the kitchen table that we all sit around is controlled by a very few, they are deciding who comes to the table, and that can determine the decisions that are made, when we go to war and when we don’

To All Journalists, Academics, Readers, and such. The Dominion, a Canadian national independent newspaper (dominionpaper.ca), and its editors are currently coordinating a cross-Canada fundraising tour for the paper. Editor-in-chief, Dru Oja Jay, and Managing Editor, Stu Neatby, are on the road this March, presenting in communities across the country The Dominion’s vision for an alternative model for public media in Canada.
The paper has been up and running — on the web and as a monthly print publication — for five years. The Dominion has grown over those five years into a source of critical hard news coverage that focuses on Canada and Canada’s role in the world. Our goal is to offer perspectives that do not appear in mainstream media, with regular sections such as Gender, Original Peoples and Environment. We have published the work of investigative journalists on the ground in Afghanistan, Palestine, Guatemala, Haiti, Indonesia and Lebanon.
Last year The Dominion incorporated as a multistakeholder coop (readers, writers and editors are acknowledged as different types of members). In our Spring ‘08 tour, we aim to present the coop to the Canadian public, and to seek out sustainers for the paper– individuals who are willing to contribute financially to the continuing work of our journalists.
These presentations are of interest to all people to whom democracy is important. They will focus on the enormous impact corporate media has on our lives and thoughts and actions, and offer possibilities for an independent alternative. Jay and Neatby also hope to participate in dialogue about important issues facing each community they visit.
Details about the tour, including dates and locations of presentations, may be found at dominionpaper.ca/tour08. The Vancouver event is:
