I’m a huge fan, Vonnegut Dollhouse

http://vonnegutdollhouse.com/images/chrisalysondanbw.jpgI usually keep my musical tastes to myself but I have to share this with y’all. Ready with an engaging and both mind and genre-bending repertoire, progressive-space-rockers Vonnegut Dollhouse are about to embark on a tour that will set tongues wagging about their live set for the first time outside of their hometown, Vancouver. Described as “far out” and “wonderfully weird,” a Vonnegut Dollhouse live show is certain to impress.

The 5 piece’s first studio release, Juno Award nominated (best artwork) and critically lauded Ornamental Etherworld (Oct 2007, Independent) was recorded and mastered by Jesse Gander at The Hive Creative Labs, with production and additional recording by Lotus Award winning sound designer Brandon Edwards.

Comprised of founding members, singer/guitarist Alyson Fun, and keyboardist James Ford along with singer/bassist, Daniel Brard, lead guitarist, Chris Cantrell, and more recently, drummer Jakub Svoboda, Vonnegut Dollhouse is crafting a new genre, progressive-space-rock, and have been showcasing their remarkable talents to audiences in some of Vancouver’s nicer venues since 2006.

Eearshot’s Anne-Marie Brugger remarks “Ornamental Etherworld presents familiar Canadian indie pop fare …What’s not so typical about Vonnegut Dollhouse is the intertwining of crunchy, 70s jazz-rock guitar licks with electronic keyboards that sound like a cross between 80′’s Moog and a church organ…. the disc reaches its apex half way through the 5th song: “Ugly Kids Steal Bikes.” That’s when Chris Cantrell metaphorically sets his guitar on fire… James Ford eagerly douses the flames with funky keyboards on the next track, “My Heart is a Partition, Your Hand is a Knife”. It’s an excellent song featuring super-crunchy guitars and ending in a tidal wave of surf pop –– a strange but aurally satisfying orchestral concoction. Vonnegut Dollhouse set themselves apart by showcasing how beautifully opposites attract.”

Citing influences like Genesis, Rush, Minus the Bear, the literary genre science fiction, along with the prog, and new wave movements, listeners will hear a culmination of sounds that when combined, create a new sound. Fans of Sonic Youth and the Pixies will hear these nuances throughout the textural soundscapes created between Chris and Alyson’s guitars, while early prog fans will identify familiar yet unique tones in the interplay between Daniel’s two synthesizers and James’ keyboard. With the addition of powerhouse drummer Jakub Svoboda, post Ornamental Etherworld, the act has demonstrated tremendous development and growth, both in instrumentation and style. Building on ideas and territory explored in the first album and eager to return to the studio once more, Vonnegut Dollhouse takes music to a new frontier with their latest batch of tunes.
