Sean Macpherson Image fromNot sure if you’ve been there, so here it is. So many peeps have encounters with “those people” in our lives who come and go and shoot the jazz with us and then, five years later, both you and them alike ask out of the blue “so…what’s your name anyways” coupled with a coy and punster grin. This is an interview that Sean Macpherson and I have come out with after a few of our convo’s… and here goes.

(1) How did you get started as a filmmaker, Sean?

I got started as an actor first. I started acting in 2006 and landed a lead role in a 16mm feature film in Calgary. I loved it so much and decided I wanted to take it a step further and act to my own material. So i moved back out to Vancouver and got some friends to help me do my first short, Mannequin Romance Novel, which I wrote, directed and acted in. I thought, this is where it’s at, and decided that this is what I’m going to keep doing.

(2) What and who were your influences?

I love Wes Anderson for his wacky humour and Cassavettes for his reckless approach. Vincent Gallo for having serious balls to do everything his own way and Guy Maddin for being the most innovative Canadian filmmaker.

(3) Who do you work with (team, sidekicks, gold peeps)?

John Woods (Gandalf of Vancouver film), Morgan Hirtle (morganhirtle.com), Keiron Lylo (best sound guy ever) Dan Moxon (bendsinister) and all my actors: TJ Silverspoon, Adam Lolacher, Susanna Kjundzic, Eric Pollins, Daleal Monjazeb, Kenya Jo Kennedy, Mark Ghanime, Natalie Hoskins, Becky Franklin, Leah Gibson.

(4) Is the writer’s strike affecting you guys at all?

Nope. We only shoot our own material.

(5) What does Vancouver need in the way of “filmmaking scene”?

A) a local producer who is dedicated to local underground productions. B) a local distributor that can take on smaller indie films and package / ship internationally. C) a supportive audience that is enthusiastic about watching locally made films. D) getting rid of the nepotists in effort to create a more free flowing scene with opportunities for more young filmmakers.

(6) What did you think of Zak & Avery, the film?

Didn’t see it. Is it good?

(7) what are your plans for the next season?

Promote my feature film HAPPY TO BE HERE.

(8) How can our readers find your work?

www.myspace.com/mannequinromance and www.myspace.com/marionbigsby

(9) What would you do with 50,000 dollars today?

Shoot another feature.

(10) Any other questions you’d like us to ask? New Projects?

My feature film HAPPY TO BE HERE is a comedy about a young man suffering from severe passive aggressive anger management disorder, was shot in Dec. It is currently in post production. We will have a screening in April. Stay tuned for the website and come check it out! And for all you aspiring filmmakers out there, keep your chin up!
