Mikey Manville and I had a casual dialogue and, low and behold before we knew it, there was plenty of material for us to use for another informal interview, to let y’all know what he’s up to in the next little while. Besides the Manvills, of course — but still with their support. He was raving about some new material he was working on and, short of giving you a full review of the cd in the next few days, I’m going to reveal as follows:
1. I heard you guys are working on something new — give us a few hints.
Well the studio is very spacious, and we will be working with some of Vancouver’s top musicians and producers to bring out the best songwriting in all of us. The songs sound huge so far and they have more substance and texture than anything we have done before. Constant touring has really made the difference this year.
2. What are some challenges you guys are looking to overcome in the next 6 months.
Well, just the ability to get family life in order after the Manvills most hectic and exciting summer….next summer will be even more insane, I’m sure. But it’s not really a challenge so much as it is the ability to balance a musicians life. Its takes some effort for sure.
3. Long term plans for the band?
Be friends and tour everywhere….one thing at a time. Ha.
4. What are your three favorite venues in Vancouver.
Richards on Richards, the Railway and the Lamplighter RIP.
5. What do you think about the live music scene in the city.
The musicians are strong and the promoters and are cool….but it looks like these Olympics are turning this city upside down. Growing pains aside, this city needs a vibe and developers and city planners are cutting this music town in half by closing shit down. Lame.
6. What’s your biggest inspiration right now?
The Travelling Wilburys. Marah from NYC. Great songs. Gonna see my family next week in Toronto….that’s always good news.
7. What side projects are y’all working on (or, about which ones can you comment).
These days my solo record Mikey Manville, Broken Arms just dropped. Great reviews so far, and we put together a hot little band for the live show. You can get everything at www.sandbagrecords.com or on iTunes.
