This a festival for DEATHROCK, BATCAVE, POST-PUNK, PSYCHOBILLY, ROCKABILLY, GOTHABILLY and anything else involved with the underground horror scene’s. It’s a special day to celebrate their hidden culture, make friends and have a good time with people who share you interests. It’s also apropos with the Lantern festival and all coincides on the same weekend. Last but not least, it DOES NOT coincide with the fireworks.

Aristata (among a few other bands) is playing the battle of the bands this month as part of the “Summer Warfare” series of concerts sponsored by Redpipe.ca. Come out and support this concept. I recall seeing bands come up with the strangest stuff when thrown into this improv setting.

Factory Nights are occasional events hosted by Snap Contemporary Art and The School of Mix to provide an opportunity for emerging artists to have their work featured in an established gallery environment. The evenings usually begin at 6pm and run until 3am which allows people to see a range of work by young painters, photographers, sculptors, illustrators and conceptual artists as well as independent short filmmakers and live musical acts. Noisy night of punky indie rock. There’s not much on these guys out there, except for a short blurb on their myspace, with no bio information. So I present this, for those who know names better than others: Jes - vox, Rhys - hits things, Owen - bass, Gordon - guitar. Take 2 parts English, 1 part Japanese & 1 part Canadian & mix it together in an Irish pub and this is what you get.
Sat, July 28, 2007. Payola$ Live @ The Commodore Ballroom (868 Granville St.), 8:30PM. Tix. $35.
Vocalists Paul Hyde and Bob Rock formed The Payola$ with drummer Chris Taylor and bassist Larry Wilkins. The group was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia and recorded mostly at Vancouver’s Little Mountain Sound. Although the band always seemed poised for a big international breakthrough, The Payola$ never quite broke out despite their artistic growth and popular success.
Sun, July 29, 2007. The Fray, Live @ Deer Lake Park (6450 Deer Lake Ave), 8:00PM. Tix.$40
The Fray started out with regular two-man jam sessions that led to writing songs and devising a style pitched between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the authentic rock of bands like Counting Crows. This all led to them being signed by Epic Records in 2004. Their debut album, How to Save a Life, was released in September of 2005. I hear Vancouver has quite a few fans. So here ya go. This nite is presented by The Beat 94.5 FM.
