20070713_OMGFridaythe13thFolkFest01.jpgFriday the 13th didn’t get any coverage anywhere else on BR so, well, what the heck, someone’s gotta capitalize on it somewhere! Today marks the kickoff of a number of great events that should — save from total disasters occurring — be a most delightful Friday night. So make sure, as the superstitions say, not to sing before breakfast, or, let’s see, don’t cross your knives or, umm, don’t spill any salt anywhere! If you do those things, I warrant, you’ll be just fine. ;)

Aside from the Friday, then, below are ten slick things you might want to be seen doing this weekend, if you have any self-respect left — not only for all the great music you could hear, but also because there actually are a plethora of things you may not want to miss for god’s sake, or for your cultural survival’s sake. I speak of the creativity and dynamic energy coming to Vancouver this weekend, and that’s not just the folk-fest, but through varying tour kickoffs and other such things that are to be had. So here goes. And PS. Don’t forget to add your favorites, in case I forgot something! Cheers.

Fri., July 13, 2007. The Sick Ones, The Deadcats, & Guests @ The Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir St.), 7:00PM. Tix. 10+

This is a snazzy CD release with lots of Psycho/Horror/Rocka varieties of Billy, predictably. Other artists featured this evening include: Season Of Nightmares, Bamboula, Slickjacks, and James-A-Billy — most of which are Vancouverite acts.

Fri., July 13, 2007. EVILFEST FRIDAY THE 13TH @ The Cobalt (917 Main St.), 7:00PM, Tix. 10+/-. (as per flyer).
This is day one of two, starting on the 13th — otherwise dubbed their “masquerade of silence,” and moving towards their “luciferian conquest” titling their saturday night. A truly dark evening from a venue that has rightfully earned that rep.

Fri., July 13, 2007. MATTHEW MEI & You Bright Minds @ Backstage Lounge (1585 Johnson St., Granville Isl.), 9:00OPM. 10+/- (unconfirmed).

A wicked show featuring some of Vancouver’s finest musicians… I’d like to see Organik again, last time he made me laugh.

Fri., July 13, 2007. The Jimmy Swift Band @ The Fairview Pub (898 W. Broadway), 10:00PM, $10+/- (unconfirmed).
This semi-east coast “rock-tronica” pioneer group returns to Vancouver to rock our faces off in another high energy show. Some band, Omnibol, is opening — from what i hear these guys are local.

Sat., July 14, 2007. FOLK FEST DAY 2 OF 3 @ JERICHO BEACH. Tix vary

Sat., July 14, 2007. EVILFEST DAY 2 OF 2 @ The Cobalt (917 Main St.), 7:00PM, Tix. 10+/-. (as per flyer).

This is day two, the “luciferian conquest” titling their saturday night. For those interesting in only a bit of dark in lieu of the shining of the folk-fest.

Sat., July 14, 2007. THE AWKWARD STAGE @ The Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir St.), 8:00PM. 8+/- (unconfirmed).
Join the Awkward Stage as they kick off their July tour! They are honest pop songs. They are pleasant and accessible yet manage to interest and surprise. You may not like every thing they will do, but they promise it will always come from the right place.

Sun., July 15, 2007. FOLK FEST DAY 3 OF 3 @ JERICHO BEACH. Tix vary

Sun., July 15, 2007. SYMPHONY AT THE PARK @ Deer Lake Park (6450 Deer Lake Ave), 7:30PM, $FREE.
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will once again perform it’s annual free summer outdoor concert. A program of light classics and popular favourites will be presented by a full orchestra. Come early, bring a blanket and a picnic basket and settle in for a wonderful evening of symphonic music in the park. Great way to wrap up the weekend!

ONCE AGAIN, don’t forget to add other stuff.
