So I tell ya — when the hard working folk at 4 THE RCRD scan the city for slick places to go and funky things to do, we often find things that don’t fit into any particular category. Or rather, they are strange events we think you’d want to know about! I like to call these, exceptions to the rule or, better yet, the outrageous shows we can’t tell you about. Until now! Instead of slotting these shows into some miscellaneous categories or, even worse, losing them forever in the vortex of the interweb bandwidth , we SHARE!. Cuz we love you! So here goes! Outrageous Gigz this week:
Thu., June 21, 2007. The Vancouver Real Estate Investing Meetup Group @ The YWCA @ (535 Hornby St.). 7:00-10:00PM.
In short, If you are engaged in professions related to the industry (real estate agents, mortgages, accounting, financial, etc ) this is an opportunity to participate directly with experienced successful developers (20+ years). OR, if you’re just a budding real-estate investor, this a good place to meet others.
Thu., June 21, 2007. CONDEMNED @ the Firehall @ (208 E. Cordova). 7:30.
CONDEMNED is a community opera that tells the story of evictions and displacement in the Downtown Eastside and a fight for the preservation of home and belonging. CONDEMNED was written collaboratively by Downtown Eastside involved writers and is performed by community singers and musicians under the musical direction of Earle Peach who composed most of the original score. It was originally directed by Susanna Uchatius and is being restaged by Vancouver director John Cooper.
Fri., June 22, 2007. SAVE THE BOOBS FUNDRAISER @ Caprice Nightclub (967 Granville St.), 9:00PM. Tix. $10.
Take part in this important fundraiser. Cristina Zappone, with the help of our friend Jasmine Murray, are raising funds for the WEEKEND TO END BREAST CANCER. So many are walking 60kms this August to join in the fight against cancer. The more people who want to join these people the better. Invite roommates, friends, family, siblings, co-workers, girlfriends, boyfriends, you name it.
Sat., Jun 23, 2007, A MOCK TRIAL OF STEVEN FRANKS - FIRST DEGREE MURDER @ UBC Law School - Moot Courtroom (1833 E. Mall, UBC Campus, behind Brock Hall). 8:30AM. I know I know, super early. Tix. FREE.
The “Forensic Science Law 3″: class will be holding a mock trial at the UBC moot courtroom. Half the class will be acting as defence and half as the crown prosecution in a fake murder trial based on real events. A judge will be presiding over the trial, this will be a full trial scenario, with examinations and cross examinations from both sides on several expert witnesses. If you show up, you may be asked to form part of the jury and listen to the evidence, then present a verdict based on what you hear. See you there. In my own element.
Sat., Jun 23, 2007, 7TH ANNUAL COAST LONGBOARDING TAKE OVER THE SEAWALL CRUISE @ Beach & Thurlow. 4:15PM, Tix. FREE.
I tell ya, this is incredible. Why haven’t I heard about this up at UBC, I think I’ve been cooped up in libraries too much. And I have a longboard, which is a totally ironic pisser. I’ll have to make up for it this Saturday. What the!
Sun., Jun 24, 2007, KITSILANO SOAP BOX DERBY @ WEST 4TH & YEW TO BURRARD, 8:00AM.
OK, this is insanity! The Kitsilano Soap Box Derby involves 60 young drivers between the ages of 9 - 13 racing down West 4th Avenue in homemade soap box cars! It is an excellent neighborhood event promoting community spirit, and a little bit of craziness. It’s a miracle the stuck-up west fourth community puts this sort of thing on, it has a Commercial Drive air to it, don’t you think?
Anything else you wanna add?
