20070621_Weekly%20Gigz01.jpgSo here we go again, it’s an exciting little week we’ve got ahead of us! Many an outgoing earthlings (and us late-twenty-somethings) like to plan their play-time at least a week in advance. I’ve put together a list of great local acts. This is the plan:

Thu., June 21, 2007. SNEAKY KIKI GIRLESQUE @ Ginger 62 (1219 Granville St.), 10:00PM. Tix. $5+-.
The fabulous Sneaky kiki girls will be back in action for yet another deliciously entertaining burlesque show. The theme is sugar so come on down and satisfy your sweet tooth. This should be a lovely way to warm up to the weekend!

Fri., Jun 22, 2007. BELLS CLANGING W/ MARNIE STERN @ Pat’s Pub (403 E. Hastings St.), 9:00PM. Tix. 6+/-.

A good evening with Marnie Sterm once again. It should be a swell nite of Infectious melodies and heart-rending harmonies, all soaring over the mechanized propulsion of human and digital drummers interacting. A lovely nite a bunch of my percussionist friends are heading out to this week! CONTINUE FOR MORE….

Fri., Jun 22, 2007. THE MOHAWK LODGE, OCTOBERMAN, & YUKON @ The Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir St.), 9:00PM. Tix. $10+/-.
I would highly advise y’all to check out Vancouver-based Mohawk Lodge, a group of rather lanky musicians who are already fairly well known in certain circles for their contributions to the angular math-rock of Second Narrows and the melodious indie-pop of Kids These Days. With the Mohawk Lodge, these guys create a rustic, acoustic-based sound enlivened by dobro and lap steel. If this is roots music, however, it’s roots music as only indie-rockers could play it. I like the sound of that. And, as if that’s no enough for one night, why not hear Octoberman & Yukon again. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Fri., June 22, 2007. ABSOLUTE FUNK SUMMER JAM SERIES @ The Library Square (300 W. Georgia St.), 9:00PM. Tix. $10+/-.
This should be old-skool as they call it. They claim they are bringing out the old school jam as Priceless, Tin Pan Alley, Dana D and Matty. I should like to be pleasantly surprised again.

Fri., Jun 22, 2007. AMON TOBIN @ The Commodore Ballroom (868 Granville St.), 9:30. Tix. $30.

OK, I can’t resist adding this because I think this guy is a legend. I’ve listen to him for all too many years not to say that Amon’s focus on the source material of music and sampling altogether place him squarely in the vast world of manipulation of sound, regardless of it’s origin. Armed with a sound engineer (Vid Cousins) and a collection of microphones he set out to find source material in pretty much everyplace possible. Robotics, animals, insects, musicians, utensils, motorbikes, and about a thousand other things that made interesting noises were all mic’ed and fashioned into the tracks that make up many of his albums. I think his show is going to be a graduation of concepts like this, but reaching a new level. Very excited! If still in doubt, Wikipedia the man, he’s amazing.

Sat., Jun 23, 2007, EXTRAVABANDSA: FEAT. NO HORSES, THE SMOKES, THE HOTEL LOBBYISTS, ETC. @ The Back Door (7 W. 2nd Ave.). 9:00PM. Tix. $5+/-.
This is a rather excessive lineup of bands I’m not too familiar with, but, as much as I can tell, all are Local. Some wonder if The Hotel Lobbyists are promoting their tour with enthusiasm, or just enthusiastically promoting tourism. I can also tell you this much: The apparent uncertainty of the words we use in this post-everything era has led many to redefine their thoughts, ideals and beliefs in sound form. The five seemingly normal individuals who comprise the Hotel Lobbyists play a rock and roll that is fresh, energetic and loud and has a tendency to excite crowds into a raucous frenzy. Check this out! You’ll also see: No Horses, The Smokes, Shiloh Lindsey, and Amy Honey.

Sun., Jun 24, 2007, WHITE STRIPES @ Deer Lake Park (6450 Deer Lake Ave), 5:00PM. Tix. $10+/-.

The Whites’ striking stage presence, often dressed in minimalist red and white outfits, is allied to their thrilling grasp of the rudiments of timeless rock music. Considering that they’re playing outdoors, I think they should definitely bloom on stage in front of a larger audience. But no fear, these guys have played since ‘97, so they’ve got plenty of experience converting a large audience. They’ve been quite innovating in the studio, from what I hear! Their “Elephant” record was recorded at using analogue equipment and only eight tracks, and offers a welcome respite from the deadening digital conformity of so much music in the new millennium.
