I’m sure I’m not the only one going to these events, so tell me about you. This is Issue #5 of the Weekly Gigz series. A caveat (read: “warning“): (1) This list is NOT exhaustive. But, (2) if you have endless time, scan the Georgia Straight, Discorder, and HOB (I link them if you like) for things to see, and add the Event in our Comments (below). I think it’s a pretty good idea to share short blurbs with each other like this. Just thought you should know. We’re curious! So there. So here goes:
Wed., Jun 06, 2007. GASTOWN PHOTOWALK in Gastown, in general. A flock of Vancouverites are taking a stroll around Gastown tomorrow, starting around, 5:30PM @ the Gassy Jack Statue (Carral & Water St.) near Alexander Street. More details are here.
Wed., Jun 06, 2007. HELLO BLUE ROSES @ The Media Club (695 Cambie St.), @ 8:30PM. Tix. $11.50. This is ridiculously cheap. HBR, have firm ties to the New Pornographers and the band Destroyer so this is a show you won’t wanna miss. Another AWESOME VANCOUVER BAND.
Thu., Jun 07, 2007. PUSSYCAT DOLL HIP HOP CLASS @ Urban Beat Dance Co.(927 Granville St., 2nd Floor), @ 6:00PM - 7:00PM. Tix. $70 for 6 classes. This is a splendid deal, and is below-average for dance-classes in the city, which range from 12-15 at least. This sexy hip hop infuses hip hop, jazzy, and latin movements. Easy to learn and make you look hot at the club, or add to your partner dancing (for all you salsa dancers!) Tell your friends 6 weeks only for $70. Thursdays 5-6pm. June 7-Jul 12.
Thu., Jun 07, 2007. THE WARREN FLANDEZ PROJECT @ The Media Club (695 Cambie St.), @ 11:00PM. Tix. $10. This will be a great show for those who haven’t seen TWFP before or for those who have, for it will take place in an intimate setting with a scaled down version of the band. All other details on this gig are here.
Thu., Jun 07, 2007. 3 SUM THURSDAYS @ The Plaza of Nations, @ Cyber Club, 9:30PM. Tix.$3, which is ridiculous. This Thursday join Dj Smoothie and a splendid young man (Aaron B) for the Kick off . The only Thursday night show casing the most Slammin funky/disco house beats in the city. Yes Ladies - tell your friends, the azz shakin grooves you always wish were played at the clubs are finally being show cased for you listening/butt shaking pleasure. No more dark and dreary beats with no funk or soul. The sound system is unrivaled in Vancouver (even better than gorgomish). And the best thing - it’s got a frickin “Laser” people. Groups of three get in free. The more the merrier, smoke’em if you got’em etc…
Fri., Jun 08, 2007. “TWIST AND SHOUT” : AN EVENING OF MUSIC AND DANCE @ Vancouver Rowing Club (450 Stanley Park Dr.), 8:00PM. Tix. $20+-. “Team BC Cancer” is hosting an exclusive evening of music and dance featuring a fantastic local Beatles re-creation band called ‘Twist & Shout’. The proceeds are going to a very great cause, in support of Team BC Cancer for the Weekend to End Breast Cancer to benefit the BC Cancer Foundation. This should prove to be a fun night, including several chances to win great prizes! Including raffle tickets for Whistler Pan-Pacific Hotel package. If you cannot attend, you may make a donation: here.
Fri., Jun 08, 2007. TAKE MY SWEETHEART TO DANCE PARTY @ False Creek Community Centre (1318 Cartwright St.), 8:30PM-11:00PM. $2 per person. Take your lover or date ballroom dancing for cheap. This shenanigan goes on every 2nd Friday of the month, and is a lovely way to be intimate before the show on a Friday nite.
Sat., Jun 09, 2007. CIRCLESQUARE @ Richards On Richards (1036 Richards St.), @ 8:00PM. Tix. $15. Circlesquare, another AWESOME VANCOUVER BAND, have taken a couple years hiatus - and were also known as March 21 - and in this context will be seen as a full-fledged recording project of dark, downbeat, and ambient electronica, slowly throbbing synth bass-lines with discordant beats. This show will epitomize life in suburbia, and life in the urban context. Many say this will be a night of wonder.
Sat., Jun 09, 2007. KITS YACHT CLUB OPEN HOUSE @ 2401 Point Grey Road (right beside Kits Pool). OK, I love sailing, and the KYC is holding an open house at Kits Yacht Club to help them get more people involved in sailing. Every registration they receive will be matched by the club itself, by giving away a FREE lesson package to attending non-profit organizations (for kids). They’re also having a raffle where you can win a free lesson package and we’ll give away a guaranteed spot in every lesson to a non-profit. I’LL BE THERE.
Sun., Jun 10, 2007. EXPRESSIONS FESTIVAL: TEEN SCHOLARSHIP EXHIBITION @ Buschlen Mowatt Galleries. 15 people from Arts Umbrella team up for a scholarship program showing-off their own stuff. The theme this year is “waste”. The reception is from 2:00pm to 5:00pm - come say helloooo to all the artists. It’s a good excuse to meet new people, and there is food and I think perhaps tasty snacks too. All other details on this gig are here.
AGAIN! FEEDBACK AND OTHER EVENTS ARE VERY WELCOME.
