Issue #4 of the Weekly Gigz series. First, a caveat (read: “warning“): (1) This list is NOT exhaustive. But, (2) if you have endless time, scan the Georgia Straight, Discorder, and HOB (I link them if you like) for things to see, and add the Event in our Comments (below). I think it’s a pretty good idea to share short blurbs with each other like this. Just thought you should know. So there. So here goes:

ALL WEEK, May 28 - Jun 01, 2007. BIKE TO WORK WEEK, Vancouver, hosted by VACC, starting 8:00AM, NOW. Tix: $0.
Greater Vancouver from home to work and back again, on bike. Cuz what the heck, the festivals are starting next month and we might as well finish May off with the right karma into June, the World Bike Month.

Mon., May 28 AND Wed., May 30, 2007. THE POLICE @ GM Place (800 Griffiths Way), 7:30PM. Tix. $31-$600, depending.

After 23 years, they reunited on February 11, 2007 to perform as the opening act of the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. The Police announced their first tour in decades February 12, 2007. The tour opens May 28 in Vancouver, Canada, and includes a June 16 headlining date at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tenn.

Tue., May 29, 2007. SYSTEM, @ Lotus Sound Lounge (455 Abbott Street @ Pender), @ 10:00PM. Tix. $6.
Featuring some of the best local House/Techno resident Dj’s Vancouver has to offer. It’s often said that people leave their inhibitions at the door, the Lotus is all about dancing! Young creatives populate this dark but friendly nightclub. The Lotus Sound Lounge prides itself in raising the bar for the Electronica and house music scene in Vancouver Canada’s top Dj’s in almost every genre hold residencies here, from Drum and bass to Progressive, Tech-house to Breaks. The Lotus is underground.

Thu., May 31, 2007. SECRET CHIEFS 3 @ The Plaza Club (881 Granville St.), 8:00PM. Tix. $15+.

This is a must see. This is classical music meets unknown sub-genres. They offer remarkably far-flung studies of the hermetic mysteries and musical traditions of unknown and under-appreciated sub-genres, with many metaphysical bends. In their album, which I’ve only heard fragments of, they draw a most expansive and coherent statement, an alchemical fusion of Morricone-esque cinematic grandeur, midnight surf guitar, traditional Middle Eastern rhythms and time signatures, demonic death-metal, and electronic deviance that I think should yield a work of awesome force. See them live!

Thu., May 31, 2007. HEY OCEAN!, @ Richards On Richards (1036 Richards St.), @ 9:00. Tix. $10+.
Hey Ocean! is a young Vancouver band with an infectious musical style and onstage charisma that continually captures the hearts of their ever-growing audience. The beautiful melodies, rich harmonies and clever lyrics of singer/songwriter David Beckingham and songstress Ashleigh Ball are both whimsical and thought provoking. Over the next six months Hey Ocean! will be touring extensively across Canada in support of their new album, making stops at major festivals and national conferences along the way.

Fri., June 01, 2007. FOR THE LUV OF IT @ The Plaza of Nations (the Azure Lounge), @ 9:00PM. Tix. $15+.

Live entertainment from talented local artists and dancers. Vancouver is teeming with vocal and dance talent and this is a way to get Vancouverites to see them in one place. Special performance by the GroundBreakers (GBoXX, Attikus, React, Break Charmer, Jess Bongjangles, and Schoolzone). Click for more details. This is a great nite to see an excess of local Vancouver talent.

Fri., June 01, 2007. TAMBULA RASA @ Rime (1130 Commercial Dr.), 9:00PM. Tix. $10+.
Tambura Rasa brings you another dynamic signature blend of gypsy violin, Flamenco guitar, Cuban percussion to a packed house of world music fans. The show will have multi-percussioinst Mike Michalkow back, Violin virtuoso Jaron Freeman-Fox, Myles Bigelow on cuban percussion, flamenco and belly dancers Karen and Leah and many more guest musicians. This shall be a nice change to the large gigs happening this week.

Fri., June 01, 2007. REAL FRIDAYS: feat. PROLIFIC & K Sound @ The Waldorf (1489 E Hastings), 10:00P. Tix 12+.
A few really interesting DJ’s are playing, namely: DJS: Mikey Daroza & Ryan Hoyle (from Calgary), and Tyler Lewis, Tyler Johnson, Ali Sani, PK, Ricco Colinares, Vinnie the Squid, & dj Koda. For those who are familiar with these names, the Waldorf should deliver this weekend.

Sat., June 02, 2007. MUD ISLAND - THEATRE PRODUCTION @ Carousel Theatre Rehearsal Space (1411 Cartright St., Gr. Isl.), 8:00PM. Tix. $10.

Set on Granville Island in 1931, the play uses mask, music, puppetry and physical theatre to take us on the journey of a young man coming to the big city and finding a home under the Granville Bridge. It is high-energy and fun, but with heart. It’s essential to give y’all something else than dance-shows, this should be a treat.

Sat., June 02, 2007. LTG LIVE @ The Lamplighter (210 Abbott), @ 9:30PM. Tix. $10+.
Unsatisfied with the current musical landscape, LTG has set the goal of writing timeless Rock ‘n Roll for all people to enjoy and songs that will engage their audience. LTG intends to follow through on that goal and does so every time they hit the stage and play that first chord. Another great show at the Lamplighter.

Sat., June 02, 2007. PLANET OF THE DRUMS @ Richards On Richards (1036 Richards St.), 9:30PM. Tix. $10.

Their eighth consecutive year touring, which is unprecedented in electronic dance music. ‘Planet of the Drums’ was conceived with the intention of bringing their sound to the forefront of the dance industry. Up until this time, with no successful tours to promote the music, DnB DJ’s were not given equal recognition in comparison to other DJs in the US dance community. This was all changed single handedly by the efforts of ‘Planet of the Drums.’

Sun., June 03, 2007. FREE HUGS CAMPAIGN IN DOWNTOWN
Ok, first click here. Your ‘personal space’ will have a fit. Have you ever heard of “Free Hugs”? Some ELI students are planning on doing “Free Hugs Campaign” on Sun, June 3rd at downtown!! The specific location is as yet unknown. The only thing you have to do is hugging people on the streets!! It’s possible some people are going to go crazy from hugging, given our obsessions with ‘personal space’ and stuff. For more info see http://www.freehugscampaign.org/.

FEEDBACK AND OTHER EVENTS ARE VERY WELCOME.
