Being that most Music gigs simmer off from Monday to Wednesday, one question most ask themselves is, what’s happening tonite, and tomorrow nite? Perhaps the meaning of the term Weekend should be expanded to include Thursdays, Fridays, and then some. In some countries like in Israel, the weekend actually includes Friday, and since the “weekend,” as a time of leisure, is a rather modern industrial-period invention, I think it should be explored a little bit, don’t you? That said, here are just a few shows you might not want to miss this “weekend”: (click BELOW to read more).
Thu, 05/10/07, Brand New @ The Croatian Cultural Centre, 06:00 PM, $23.00.
Presented by Union Events, Spearheading their tour in Vancouver, then across Canada, and then off an other pretty big jump to Australia, I say why not see a band before they (a) make it big or (b) tire and wither away forever. Some have called these guys the greatest thing since sliced bread, and that they are uber-grateful to their crowds. See for yourself.
Thu, 05/10/07, Curtis Santiago, Ill-Esha & Bright Red Paper @ The Library Square (New Music West, 8:00PM, $10.
Curtis Santiago has been behind some of Vancouver’s chillest private shows around town, to the demise of a lot of large promotion companies. It’s always good to have events located outside of the main core of Granville, and the like. This year, however, Curtis (among a few other independents) is featured in the New Music West lineup, which should be an interesting change.
Thu, 05/10/07, Mark Hildreth, Paula Toledo, Ben Sigston, Colin Janz & Greg Sczebel @ the Yale, 8:00PM, $10.
I propose this show mostly because of Paula Toledo, who’s been tantalizing the Media Club over the last bit with her sensual voice, local productions, and multi-talented repertoires. Mark Hildreth makes this a broad show, situating the audience in Stevie Wonder, Lennon, among other influences, from a young star to be.
Fri, 05/11/07, Dimmu Borgir @ The Commodore Ballroom, 07:00 PM, $29.50.
This Norwegian group has an extensive following in Vancouver, not on from those who treck to the dark-metal nights in our plentiful independent venues, but also those who are willing to travel from the burbs to these these early-90’s black metal legends. From their deput-EP, which sold out in weeks, to their latest album which incorporated the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, they have a breadth of work few bands of any genre can compare to. Over the last 15 years they’ve had plethora of MTV coverage among other mainstream regards for their music, but they maintain a very independent air, which is respected.
Sat, 05/12/07, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ Richards On Richards, 07:00 PM, $27.00.
What can I say about BRMC except for their rich and styling ability to recreate the studio sound in a live show, particularly of their new songs from the album titled Baby 81. I often hear of people describe these guys as a band that is indicative of our rock n’ roll drenched times (with or without their clichés), with their acoustic guitar of mass destruction, to their slide guitar, to some of the best guitar effects known to earth, and all the way back to their chain-smoking coughing rocker musical style. This will be a must see - esp. given that the North American tour will not recur soon.
All these aside, any other suggestions on where to go, and how to define, this “weekend”?
